Tips on Engagement Photo Outfits

Choosing what to wear for your engagement session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. In this post,  I’m sharing my best engagement photo outfit tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and true to yourselves on camera. Whether you’re going for timeless and elegant or casual and cozy, these styling suggestions will help you look and feel your best in every shot.

1. Stick with soft, neutral tones

Light, soft, and neutral tones (whites, creams, beiges, taupes, or light like blush or dusty blue) photograph beautifully. They’re romantic, classic and they help keep the focus on you.

2. Coordinate, don’t match

Yes my aunt had a photo of her entire family in denim and white tops. Goodbye 90s. Instead of wearing the same color, aim to choose colors that complement each other without being identical.

Think tones. Cool tones: blues, greens, purples, grays. Warm tones: pinks, reds, beiges. Try to stay in the same tone family.

3. Keep the formality level even

Imagine one of you in a full suit and the other in jeans and a graphic tee — it just wouldn’t make sense visually (or in real life, right?). You don’t need to be identically dressed up or down, but you do want to be on the same level of “fancy.”

Going for something more formal? Think mid-to-floor length dresses with heels (if you’re comfy!) for her, and dress pants, button-ups, and maybe a blazer for him. Keeping it casual? A flowy sundress and sandals pair beautifully with shorts and a short-sleeve button down. Just aim for outfits that feel like you belong in the same scene together.

4. Bring a second outfit

We’ve got time for a quick wardrobe change! Feel free to bring an outfit that’s a bit nicer, and one that’s casual…or whatever your heart desires!

5. Prioritize comfort and confidence

You want to feel good in your clothes — that’s what translates in photos. If you’re constantly adjusting your sleeves or worried about a certain angle, it’s going to be hard to fully relax. Think about outfits you already love wearing and feel amazing in.

Tried on a dress that looks perfect from the front but not from the side? Probably not the best pick. I’ll be capturing you from all angles to give your gallery variety — so choose something you love from every angle.
